Why is a wedding ring worn on the ring finger? — And why the 'vein of love' is not real

People say the wedding ring goes on the left ring finger because a vein runs from it straight to the heart. That vein does not exist. The rule was actually written down in the English Book of Common Prayer in 1662.

Why do barbershops have a red, white and blue spinning pole?

That spinning pole outside a barbershop is not decoration. It is the old sign of a barber-surgeon: the pole is the stick the patient gripped, the top basin held leeches, and the bottom one caught the blood.

Why is writing backwards in a mirror? — And the direction a mirror flips isn't left-right at all

Why does a mint candy feel icy cold when it is just room temperature?

A mint candy cools nothing down, yet it feels like ice. Menthol simply flips the body's cold switch, TRPM8, so the brain receives a fake message that says cold.

Why do cats almost always land on their feet?

Cats flip in mid-air not because they have nine lives, but by splitting one turn into two: 90° with the front half, 10° the other way with the back. And the idea that higher floors are safer is a statistical trap.

If there are countless stars, why is the night sky dark?

Slice the universe into shells of equal thickness and the sky should blaze like the Sun's surface. It doesn't — and the answer lies in the universe's age and its expansion.
